WASHINGTON, July 2, 2009; The Roadway Infrastructure Safety Coalition (RISC) is pleased to announce the addition of AAA to its quickly growing ranks. RISC was created in late 2008 to raise awareness on the need for increased attention and investment in roadway safety infrastructure. Through doing so, RISC works to reduce the staggering number of lives lost on our nation's roadways. Evidence suggests that roadway infrastructure plays a significant role in as many as one third of the deaths that occur annually on America's roadways.

RISC is currently composed of the following organizations all committed to reducing the number of deaths on highways through investments in roadway safety infrastructure: the American Highway Users Alliance, American Public Works Association, American Society of Highway Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Traffic Safety Services Association, National Association of Counties, National Association of County Engineers, and the National Association of Development Organizations.

As North America's largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 51 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers.

"AAA is excited to join RISC and its existing members in continuing our role as an advocate for roadway safety improvements that have been proven to save lives," said Kathleen Marvaso, AAA vice president of public affairs.

AAA is a welcome addition to RISC. The Coalition is excited about AAA's willingness to join in the fight to advance roadway safety.

Thus far this Congress, RISC has been actively involved in highlighting roadway safety infrastructure issues to members of both the U.S. House and Senate and working to ensure traffic safety is a top national priority. RISC looks forward to continuing this work with AAA's involvement.

Last year, more than 38,000 individuals lost their lives on America's roadways. RISC will continue efforts to raise awareness concerning the need to focus on roadway safety and to invest the funds necessary to make everyone's journey safer.
