BOTANY, AUSTRALIA – November 9, 2009: At the award ceremony of the “Goldenes Lenkrad 2009” in Berlin on 4th November, Volkswagen was able to rejoice at no less than two honours: the new Polo won in the supermini category. And the newly conceived Polo BlueMotion hit the mark in the “Grünes Lenkrad” category, which was established in 2007.

The new Polo, which was launched in Europe in June, turned out to be the big winner of the evening: The fifth generation of the bestseller, which is equipped with an enormously efficient powertrain technology and meets the highest demands on safety, comfort and quality, made its way to the top against four competitors in the supermini category. The newly conceived Polo BlueMotion was able, likewise, to convince the jury across the entire line and reaped the “Grünes Lenkrad”: its average fuel consumption of 3.3 litres and a CO2 emission of 87 g/100 km were certainly the determining factors in the decision. In light of these figures, the Polo BlueMotion is the finest choice as both the most economical and eco-friendly five-seater in the world. The Polo BlueMotion is equipped with a highly innovative but affordable high-tech package. This includes a new 1.2 TDI common rail engine, recovery of braking energy by regenerative braking, a Stop-Start system, low rolling resistance tyres, as well as sporty aerodynamic elements.

“Goldenes Lenkrad” is one of the most important awards for new car models. This award has been granted by BILD am Sonntag and AUTO BILD since 1976. This year’s winners were determined by an independent jury, made up of editors-in-chief of the 22 international editions of AUTO BILD, as well as technicians, motor sports professionals and celebrities, after test drives in Balocco, Italy, lasting several days. A panel of experts hailing from the political sector, environmental associations, the automotive industry and automobile clubs decides over the granting of the award of the “Green Steering Wheel” after a preliminary selection has been made by readers.
