DETROIT - October 11, 2010: Chevrolet says it will take about 10 hours to fully charge a Volt's battery with a standard 120 volt outlet. For battery-only cars a 120 volt charge could take more than 16 hours. To alleviate long charge times, a 240-volt home charging unit can be installed on the wall of almost any garage or carport. The faster, more convenient charging option can fully charge a Volt in about four hours. In addition, utility companies say consumers shouldn't worry that electric cars will be a drain on the electric supply and are working on offering special rates to encourage electric car owners to charge during off-peak hours. The home charging unit will retail for $490, plus the cost of installation. Installation estimates are around $1,500, yikes!
