Akerson Stresses Leadership to Notre Dame Business Grads

GM CEO says four easy-to-define approaches are keys to success

SOUTH BEND, IN--May 2013: General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson told graduates of the Mendoza School of Business at Notre Dame on Saturday that authentic leadership is the greatest need in the world where they will work and live.

“Every institution that we rely on, whether it is business or government or academia, demands effective leadership to deal with complex issues, now more than ever,” Akerson said.

He said that from a business perspective, a good leader:

Defines reality by setting priorities Allocates capital and scarce resources to meet those priorities. Is willing to serve Leads by example

“It doesn’t matter if your road leads to corporate America, the non-profit sector or government service,” Akerson said.

Approximately 450 students received degrees, ranging from traditional MBAs to Master of Non-profit Administration to Master of Science in Accountancy.
