COPENHAGEN -- December 9, 2015: The iconic Ford Mustang of the 1960s is the inspiration – and the raw material – for the latest creation from REC Watches. Made from salvaged and recycled Mustangs, the P-51 wrist watch is a must-have timepiece for anyone with a passion for classic cars and muscular, bold design. The P-51 name is also a reference to the WWII-era combat fighter, from which Ford borrowed the nickname "Mustang." An associated Kickstarter campaign, which runs through January 4, has already exceeded its funding goal by over 50%.

A number of design flourishes make reference to the classic car from which each watch is made. To illustrate the connections, REC Watches has put together a short video. The timepiece itself is powered by an automatic mechanical engine.

Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup, founders of REC Watches, have asked for the community's support not only in funding their company's projects, but also in sourcing new ideas. The choice of the Ford Mustang as the model for the P-51 was determined by a poll on the REC Watches website.

"The Mustang is the king of the American muscle cars," says Mygh. "It's as American as apple pie. Sadly, there are many Mustangs rusting away in garages and junkyards. We want to recover, recycle and reclaim these classic cars in a way that does justice to their spirit of freedom and power."

The P-51 will be available in three distinct variations, yet each one harkens back to the Ford Mustangs of half a century ago. The P-51-01, for instance, features skeleton and orange hands over a black dial with a black calf leather strap.

Last year, REC Watches released its first collection of unique watches. Based on the classic Minis of the 1960s, the collection was a huge success. That success has no doubt contributed to the buzz surrounding the current project.

As with any piece of fine art, the history of individual classic cars is important. To that end, each P-51 comes with a "Story Card," featuring an NFC chip and QR code. When scanned, the Story Card activates a link to a video telling the story of the specific car behind the watch.

With the Kickstarter campaign going so well, many of the limited rewards have already been exhausted; however, several compelling rewards are still available. Backers can expect their rewards to ship in Spring/Summer 2016.

About REC Watches

REC is the creation of Christian Mygh and Jonathan Kamstrup. They're both Danish, (relatively) young, dry-humored and passionate about watches and cars. Their bright idea was to fuse all those elements together in a watch brand. After a lot of brainstorming, and a bottle of whiskey (might have been two), REC Watches was born.
