MESA, Ariz., Dec. 28, 2017 -- American Traffic Solutions (ATS), the leading road safety camera provider in North America, has released its annual string of shocking footage of red-light running collisions and near misses captured by its red-light safety cameras in communities across the country. This compilation serves as an eye-opening warning about the dangers of reckless driving and red-light running.

The video, available here https://youtu.be/r0jqaLux6N0 includes footage from red-light safety camera programs in: Arizona, Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New York, and North Carolina.

"Crashes caused by red-light running can be devastating.  We hope that by sharing these videos, we can raise awareness of the dangers and hopefully prevent further crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by red-light running," said Liz Caracciolo, ATS Safety General Manager. "All of these crashes and near misses could have been avoided if drivers had slowed down and stopped. Every time a driver runs a red light, they not only put their own life, but the lives of others in jeopardy."

Red-light safety cameras have a measurable impact on traffic safety. Independent media reports show similar results across the country this year, including:

  • In Nassau County, NY the total number of crashes at Nassau red-light camera intersections declined by 31 percent compared with the 12-month period before the cameras were installed, while accidents involving injuries fell by nearly 43 percent. https://www.newsday.com/long-island/transportation/red-light-camera-revenues-accidents-drop-in-nassau-suffolk-reports-show-1.13893640
  • Balcones Heights, Texas has reported a 70 percent reduction in crashes where red-light cameras are installed. Source: http://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/balcones-heights-sees-70-drop-in-traffic-accidents-since-red-light-cameras-implemented
  • Cities with active red-light camera programs experienced 21% fewer fatal red-light running crashes and 14% fewer fatal crashes of all types at signalized intersections. • AAA tells us 92.8% of drivers view it as unacceptable to drive through a traffic light that just turned red when they could have stopped safely; while 68% view it as completely unacceptable. "This video shows how running red lights can lead to scary crashes.  We urge all drivers to stop on red," added Caracciolo.
