We Must Remember Them - A Poem For Memorial Day

To hold our memories of them so dear, of all the men and women who put their dreams and lives on the line

Where danger lies a stalker, waiting to take their breath away, while the soldier plowed ahead with determination and fear.

We must remember, we must remember them, those heroes of land and sea, and those who chose to fly, to fly to the skies of blue that turned as dark as the midnight sky.

For many, too many -their spirits began to shudder as smoke choked their breath away, and hope gave way to the resignation, "Today I'm Going To Die"

Treading the waters so deep and wide, men and women continued their mission, for God and Country, their hearts would abide as their dreams and lives were lost for all eternity.

Surprised by attacks with brutal disregard for life, they fought to the end, knowing that life and limbs would be lost, for them there would be no place to hide

Yes by land, Yes by sea and Yes in the shies, they were ordered to fight, and fight they did, they fought for our country's freedom so that we might be free

So now we stand for them, we stand for our country's freedom and we remember the sacrifice so that you and I might be free

Yes we must remember that freedom is not cheap, for too many lives and limbs-were lost so that we might as a free people keep all the things we have, and all the things we can do

We may freely care for our family and make our homes secure, and go to our houses of prayer without fear that the readings of our scriptures will need an excuse

Our search for the truth continues, whether we are red, yellow, black tan or white, we are all God's children and we must remember to love one another and do what's right
