SHANGHAI CHINA May 4, 2020; Buick today launched the new-generation GL8 ES and GL8 Legacy in China. The newest members of the brand’s popular multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) lineup are being offered in nine variants with a price ranging from RMB 232,900 to RMB 399,900.

The new GL8 ES and GL8 Legacy come with extensive upgrades of their design, cabin experience, driving efficiency, connectivity and safety features to set a new benchmark for large premium MPVs.

They are joining the new-generation GL8 Avenir family – the highest expression of Buick’s luxury, which reached the market in early April – to create the most compelling MPV portfolio for Buick yet.

Since the GL8 was introduced in China in 1999, more than 1.2 million have been sold through five generations.

“The GL8 has been a phenomenon from the start, defining China’s high-end MPV segment,” said Molly Peck, executive director of Buick Sales and Marketing at SAIC-GM. “The latest variants build on Buick’s unmatched MPV expertise, offering exceptional styling, comfort and functionality across the lineup that will go beyond our customers’ expectations.”

New-Generation GL8 ES

The new GL8 ES inherits many of the design, quality and intelligent driving technologies adopted by the new-generation GL8 Avenir family. It has a sleek profile and extra roominess, with a length of 5,219 millimeters, width of 1,878 millimeters, height of 1,799 millimeters and segment-leading wheelbase of 3,088 millimeters.

Through its signature chrome-plated grille, flowing outline and new spread-wing tail design, the new GL8 ES represents a modern interpretation of Buick’s sculptural beauty. Its elegant styling is further emphasized through new LED headlamps, exclusive car door shadow lighting and up to 19 dynamic concierge lighting modes.

The interior has received significant improvement as well. The substantial use of premium materials, chrome trim and refined stitching give the model a fusion of luxury and technology.

The new seven-seat GL8 ES has the highest level of seating comfort in its class. The second-row seats have a special ergonomic design and wider armrests. The 10-point adjustable seats can be moved an extra-long 315 millimeters forward and backward for business-class spaciousness. The theater-like ascending cabin layout provides easy access for third-row occupants.

Buick’s signature QuietTuning technology, 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint® surround-sound stereo system, AQS air quality control system and nano-scale anti-PM2.5 filter are among the other standout user-friendly features.

The new GL8 ES is equipped with Buick’s most advanced eConnect 3.0 connectivity system, which includes a 12.3-inch floating center console touchscreen, head-up display (HUD) and streaming mirror. The system not only supports over-the-air updates for nine key vehicle control modules such as the infotainment system, OnStar and intelligent driving system, but also offers enhanced voice recognition capability and personalized functionality through in-vehicle apps.

The new GL8 ES offers a spirited and efficient performance, with GM’s eighth-generation Ecotec 2.0T engine and the only standard nine-speed Hydra-Matic intelligent transmission in its segment. The engine delivers maximum power of 174 kW. Its fuel economy of 7.9 liters/100 kilometers represents an 8% improvement from the previous generation. Electronic transmission range selection (ETRS) technology is available for the first time to enhance the smooth and responsive handling.

The new GL8 ES is also available with an array of advanced safety technologies that include Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Collision Assistance, Side Blind Zone Alert and Buick’s first advanced driver assistance system.

New-Generation GL8 Legacy

The entry-level member of the GL8 family, the optimized GL8 Legacy, has a breakthrough design, refined cabin layout and extensive technology, making it ideal for both business use and family use.

The new GL8 Legacy adopts the nameplate’s traditional grille and front fascia, making it easily recognizable. Its roomy interior comes with seven seats. The third-row seats can be folded down, creating additional cargo space.

The new GL8 Legacy is a segment leader in consumer-centric amenities, which include an extra-large panoramic sunroof and distinct Moon White surround lighting. A new grey-tone and wood-accented interior gives it a natural feel.

New to the GL8 lineup is the Legacy Welfare edition, which is designed to meet the diverse needs of disabled people. Electric swivel seats can rotate to the outside of the vehicle and are adjustable to provide convenient access. After passengers get on board, the seats return to their normal position and have locking functionality for added safety. The special edition also has the memory function for seats.

New GL8 Legacy buyers can benefit from 100G of free 4G data service annually and over 50 onboard services enabled by the all-new OnStar full-time online assistant such as vehicle remote control.
