In its 13th year, the Tiguan has become a popular crossover with a loyal following and the 2020 model has upgraded tech and safety features.
Mobile device addicts will appreciate a standard Wi-Fi hotspot. In addition, there is standard collision-avoidance technology with a blind-spot warning system and automatic braking. Also available are lane keep assist, a power liftgate, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, remote start, rain-sensing wipers, and a heated steering wheel. The top models include ambient lighting, a surround-view camera, , and a hands-free liftgate. A panoramic sunroof is also available. IIHS gave the 2020 a Top Safety Pick+ Award.

All of the Tiguans have an eight-speed automatic transmission powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder motor that develops 184 hp and 221 lb-ft. There are multiple driving modes on 4Motion-equipped models, including on-road, off-road, and snow mode. With about eight inches of ground clearance, it's best to avoid the big boulders when off-road. FWD models get an EPA estimated mileage of 22/29/25 mpg city/highway. AWD models come in at 20/27/23 mpg. Towing is possible up to a maximum of1,500 lbs.
In terms of handling, the adaptive dampers lighten up bumps, steering is light but firm, and braking is nicely featherable as well as fully available for sudden stops.

The FWD models come standard with the capacity to seat seven people. The AWD models can come with a third seat option, otherwise it's a five seater. The interior is quite roomy with seats that are well cushioned. Cargo space is determined by seating. With second and third row seats flattened, the cargo space is 12 cubic feet. Fold the third row down and you get 33 cubic feet. With both rows down we aquire 65 cubic feet.
