Survey: 74% of Americans to take next vacation by car rather than plane

—PLUS: 51% of Drivers Say They Have Not Been Disinfecting Their Vehicle; and 46% of Parents of Teen Drivers Say They’ve Witnessed Their Teen Using Phone While Driving—

DATA UNVEILED ON BEHIND-THE-WHEEL DRINKING, MARIJUANA AND ANXIETY AMID COVID-19

AUSTIN, Texas (October 21, 2020)—Aceable.com<https://www.aceable.com/>, a leading online education provider, today unveiled the results of its Teen Driving Safety in the COVID-19 Era Report<https://www.aceable.com/blog/teen-driving-safety-covid-19-era-report-2020/>. According to the report, which was released during National Teen Driver Safety Week, 46% of parents of teen drivers say they have witnessed their teen driver using their phone while he or she is driving.

Further, the report—which provides statistics and analysis on additional timely topics—reveals that 51% of American drivers have not been disinfecting their vehicle, and 74% of Americans say that, due to COVID-19, their next vacation will be by vehicle rather than by plane.

“The pandemic has made many Americans anxious about being on the road. In addition to being worried about exposure to the virus, we are driving less frequently, have seen some states relax licensing standards for new drivers, and are distracted behind the wheel. These add up to dangerous conditions for teen drivers and everyone on the road with them,?? said Laura Adams, Analyst at Aceable.com.

Among the report’s findings:

* ANXIETY: 20% of drivers say that the pandemic has made them a more anxious driver.

* DRINKING: 12% of drivers say that since the pandemic began, they have had alcohol and driven.

* MARIJUANA: 10% of drivers say that since the pandemic began, they have smoked marijuana and driven.

Meanwhile, 81% of parents of teen drivers say that they trust their teen to drive safely, and 68% of Americans say that they expect online driver’s education, taken instead of in-person classes, will increasingly become the norm in the coming years.

“To encourage and enforce safe driving behaviors, parents should consider completing a parent-teen driving contract with young drivers. Creating a written document is an excellent way to explain what’s safe and the types of behaviors you expect your teen to do and not do. Include the consequences of violating the agreement, so teens know what happens if they don’t comply,?? added Adams.

Methodology

The survey for Aceable’s Teen Driving Safety in the COVID-19 Era Report was conducted online using Survey Monkey. The national sample of 1,054 adults spans across U.S. geographic regions and income levels and was weighted to reflect the gender distribution and the age distribution across the 18-44 and 45+ age brackets in U.S. census data. Drivers are represented by the 953 respondents who answered that they are a licensed driver, and parents of teen drivers are represented by the 228 respondents who answered that they are a parent of a teen driver.
