Many people who own a car don't realize the importance of keeping it clean. They don't want to spend the time and money to clean their car covers. But, it's a rather small investment that pays off in big dividends.

Keeping a Car Cover clean seem like a daunting task, but they are easy to clean. All you need are the right car wash tools, detergent, and water.

Manual Method Of Washing Your Car Cover

The manual method has 8 simple steps that can make your cover look practically new. Let's take a look at all 8 steps.

Step 1: Shake It For A Minute To Losen The Dust Over It

Hold the plastic car cover in both hands, like when you clean a California Duster.

Shaking up the dirt helps to remove loose particles.

Make sure this is done in an uncluttered and well-lit area, where it will be easy to clean the debris.

Holding the cover in one hand and using the other to beat out any remaining particles is the best way to ensure dust removal.

Step 2: Stretch The Cover Tightly All Over Your Car

Next, find a parking space and strap the cover onto your car. Be sure to stretch it out as tight as possible.

It takes practice to minimize creases and wrinkles. Make sure that it is secured properly and that there's no chance of it falling off during the washing process.

Step 3: Vacuum It Thoroughly To Remove The Sand

You should run your vacuum across the car cover to get rid of the stubborn sand. This step is very important to make sure that there is no dirt on the cover, otherwise, when you move onto the scrubbing, you might scratch the vehicle's paint from the surface of the cover.

Step 4: Make A Soapy Solution For Your Cover Cleaning

Fill the bucket with water and add soap. Mix it all up gently to build up a lather. Set the bucket aside.

To dampen the cover first, use a hose. If you don't have a hose, you can pour clean water over the cover by using a different bucket.

Step 5: Scrub it With A Towel

Return to your soap solution. Use a soft microfiber cloth or towel to scrub the cover after you soak the cloth in the bucket. In either up-and-down or back-and-forth motions, diligently wash the entire cover.

It's recommended to scrub in a single direction. There are swirls and circular motions that you should avoid. The best way to clean the cover is to begin from the top. You may need a small step stool or ladder to reach all areas. You won't accidentally miss out on any portion if you use this method.

There are stains from bird droppings and bugs that you should be aware of. You will have to address these with a bit more force. They may not wash off with just a single swipe. If you can't get rid of them after a few scrubs, give them a generous amount of soapy solution, let them sit for a short while, and try again.

The soap will break down stains slowly. Wait and scrub other parts of the car. You can go back to the stains after five minutes if you need to. Before moving on to the next step, you should make sure you scrubbed the entire car cover.

Step 6: Rinse Thoroughly With A Hose

The cover needs to be hosed down by sections. It's a good idea to use water that's not too hot and rinse thoroughly. There shouldn't be any soap residuals left on the cover. If you repeat this step two to three times, it will be safe.

If you don't have a hose, you can use buckets of clean water as a replacement. It will take more time and effort, but it will still work well. Let it sit for a while and then let it dry off.

Step 7: Repeat All Steps By Turning It

Turn the car cover inside out and redo all the steps from one to six.

Step 8: Let It Dry In The Air

Again, allow it to dry on its own. If it is still covered over your car, then just let it dry. If you don't want it to dry on the vehicle, you can clip it onto a clothesline. Some sites recommend throwing it over a fence, but we don't think that is a good idea as it can pick up some dirt, stains, and discoloration from the fence material.

Make sure to park your car where it is exposed to good sunlight.

It is possible to speed up the drying process if you wash your car cover on a windy day, but watch out for debris and dust getting onto your cover.

Birds dropping can make your cloth dirty again if you let them dry under a tree or other shade area where birds congregate. Watch the cover closely. If a bird or insect dropping falls on the cover wipe the dirt away as soon as possible. It becomes difficult to remove once it has hardened. You will have a clean car cover when it is dried.
