Department of Transportation Sets Coalition for Air Bag Safety

06/17/96

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Frederico Pena recently announced the formation of an unprecedented coalition of auto makers, air bag suppliers, insurance companies, safety organizations, and the Federal Government to study ways to prevent injuries and fatalities caused by air bags, especially to children. Coalition members have pledged $10 million to pursue a three point program.

  1. Educate drivers and parents regarding air bag safety and child seats.
  2. Start a campaign to convince states to pass "primary" seat belt laws.
  3. Increase enforcement of all seat belt laws at the local and state levels.
