Dick Trickle on Pole for BGN GM Goodwrench/Delco Battery 200

31 May 1997

DOVER, DE -- A happy Dick Trickle has snagged the pole for the GM Goodwrench/Delco Battery 200 to be run tomorrow, (Saturday May 31). Trickle, driving the Dura Lube Chevrolet, got the pole after running a 24.173 second lap at 148.926 mph around the one-mile long concrete high-banked facility.

From the Busch Pole award ceremony Trickle said, "We got kind of a rhythm going. This is a new car they built. And they got another coming. Our old cars ain't too bad, but out new ones are getting better than the old ones.

Trickle is also quite bullish on his chances tomorrow and said, "It's gotta be your day in order to win races. But you also have to be be-boppin' around the top-five to win a race. I think we can be there Saturday."

Sitting next to Trickle is another Winston Cup regular Bobby Labonte. Labonte toured the 1 mile circuit with a 24.176 second lap at 148.908 mph.

The drivers that will round out the top-five are Terry Labonte, Elton Sawyer and Stevie Reeves.

The day was quite eventful for a few drivers as they got their cars tangled up with Dover's hard walls. Sterling Marlin, Ron Barfield and Hermie Sadler all lost control during their qualifying lap and did at least some damage to their cars. Barfield was able to get his car to the line before he lost control.

The morning practice session also took it's share of drivers. Those succumbing to the Dover track were Jeff Fuller, Ed Spencer III.

The GM Goodwrech/DELCO Battery 200 will be run at 1:10 PM eastern and will be carried live by TNN TV and MRN Radio.
