NASCAR Winston Cup Drivers Busy, Despite "Week Off"

22 July 1997

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Several Winston Cup drivers will be busy this weekend despite a break in the series schedule.

Darrell Waltrip will have the busiest weekend of all as he attempts to run in both the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race (Saturday, July 26) and the NASCAR Winston West event at Pikes Peak International Raceway (Sunday, July 27). He is also slated to take part in the True Value Firebird IROC series finale at Michigan Speedway, Sunday morning.

Waltrip is just one of seven Winston Cup drivers running in IROC this year. Robby Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Terry Labonte, Dale Jarrett and Mark Martin will also be in Brooklyn, MI this weekend. Martin is the current IROC points leader and is seeking to become the first driver in history to win three series titles.

Ken Schrader has filed an entry for the NWW race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs, CO.

No less than 10 Winston Cup regulars are scheduled to compete in the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division Gateway 300. Ricky Craven, Bobby and Terry Labonte, Joe Nemechek, Kyle Petty, Jimmy Spencer, Dick Trickle, Kenny Wallace, and Michael Waltrip will join Darrell Waltrip in Madison, IL to break in the new Gateway International Raceway. The 1.25-mile, paved oval will play host to the Busch Series for the first time.

Bobby Hamilton and 1995 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion Mike Skinner will participate at the Heartland Park Topeka road course in the NCTS Lund Look 275K set for this Sunday.
