NASCAR BGN Series Gateway 300 Preview -- #37, Scot Walters
23 July 1997
WALTERS TO MAKE NASCAR BUSCH SERIES DEBUT AT GATEWAY Central City, KY (July 18, 1997) - Louisville, Kentucky native Scot Walters will make his NASCAR Busch Series debut on July 26 at the Gateway International Raceway driving the Brewco Motorsports No. 55 Brewco Collision Repair Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the Gateway 300. Walters, 29, currently drives the Brewco Motorsports No. 37 Red Man Chevrolet NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series entry in select events. He made his truck series debut on July 12 at the Louisville Motor Speedway, finishing seventh. "Scot did a fantastic job driving the Red Man truck in Louisville," said team owner Clarence Brewer, Jr. "If sponsorship can be secured, we would like to field a truck for him full-time in 1998. In order to preserve his rookie status, Scot can only compete in five truck series races this year. "To better prepare him for the future and provide him with the most seat-time possible, we decided to enter a car for him in the inaugural race at the Gateway International Raceway," continued Brewer. "The Busch Series cars are very similar in weight and horsepower to the trucks and since this is the first race at Gateway, none of the drivers have an experience advantage over Scot." Brewco Motorsports also fields the No 37 Timber Wolf Chevrolet full-time for Busch Series driver Mark Green. Both Walters and Green spent July 14 testing at the Gateway International Raceway. "I never expected this opportunity with Brewco Motorsports to pan out like it has," said Walters. "To be able to start in a Busch Series race is definitely a step up in my career. After running some laps, I now know what I need to do in order to prepare myself for my first Busch Series race. The track drives a lot like the Homestead Motorsports Complex and I really like that track. My goal for the race is to qualify, finish and bring the car home in one piece." Walters has competed in the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series for the past four seasons, earning the 1993 Rookie-of-the-Year title. In eight 1996 Slim Jim All Pro starts, Walters won two races (Winchester, Indiana and Homestead, Florida) and scored one pole (Louisville, Kentucky). By Brewco Motorsports Public Relations
