As part of an early birthday gift to his father, Ryan McLeod won his go-kart race in the Champ-Kart Division at Concord Speedway on Friday, July 18. - This Friday, July 25, Steve "Big Guy" Helwig, jackman for the #34 Royal Oak Charcoal Chevrolet, will celebrate his birthday at Gateway International Raceway by preparing McLaughlin's car in hopes of taking their third checkered flag for the 1997 season. - McLaughlin took advantage of his weekend off by getting as much rest and relaxation as possible. On Friday he went to Concord Speedway to watch several of Team 34 Racing's crew members participate in go-kart races. Then, he spent both Saturday and Sunday on Lake Norman with some friends. - The #34 Royal Oak Charcoal Chevrolet that McLaughlin will drive this weekend is the same car that won at New Hampshire International Speedway on May 10, 1997 and placed second at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 12, 1997. This particular Royal Oak Chevy had three second place finishes during the 1996 season at South Boston, Milwaukee and Indianapolis. - Mike McLaughlin is currently sixth in the NASCAR Busch Series point standings. He is 25 points out of fifth place and 91 points out of fourth. - On Thursday, July 31, McLaughlin will participate in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck race at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The truck that McLaughlin will drive is owned by NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ken Schrader.
