Trans-Am: Report and Results from Trois-Rivieres

4 August 1997

KENDALL EIGHT FOR EIGHT, TIES DONOHUE RECORD WITH TROIS-RIVIERES VICTORY

TROIS-RIVIERS, Quebec, Can. - Tom Kendall, driving the No. 11 All
Sport Body Quencher Ford Mustang Cobra, tied Mark Donohue's 1968 Trans-Am
record of eight-straight wins with a 8.406-second margin of victory over
Jon Gooding on the streets of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Can.
Kendall, of Manhattan Beach, Calif., started the 55-lap, 82.83-mile
race third but passed leader Dorsey Schroeder, of Osage Beach, Mo., on lap
three and was never threatened, averaging 78.043 mph over the 1:03:40.778
race to earn his 23rd career victory.
"This win was probably more important to me than if I should break
the record by winning the next one," said Kendall. "Now that I've tied the
record, it's something that can't be taken away. You can win more races
than Donohue, but it's tough to say you've surpassed his accomplishments."
Finishing third was Paul Gentilozzi, driving the No.5 RISO
Chevrolet Camaro. Gentilozzi started the race fifth and was running fourth
on lap three when a stuck throttle cable sent him into the turn one wall,
putting him back to eighth. From there, Gentilozzi sliced his way back to
the lead group, passing Mike Borkowski for fourth on lap 41 and Schroeder
for third seven laps later.
Schroeder ran in second for most of the contest but a slip on lap
38 sent his No. 12 Raybestos Mustang Cobra into the turn one wall,
eventually losing positions to Gooding, Michael Lewis and Borkowski on his
way to a sixth-place finish.
Lewis, driving the No. 55 Red Line Oil Mustang Cobra, finished
fourth from his ninth-place start, earning the CIPA Mirrors Pass Of the
Race Award for his lap 47 pass of Borkowski for fifth. Lewis was also the
Raybestos Rising Start of the Race.
Borkowski, in the No. 4 Textron Mustang Cobra, finished fifth,
followed by Schroeder, R.J. Valentine, John Miller IV, Randy Ruhlman and
Bill Saunders.
Jim Briody, driving the No. 42 Utility Industries/Prudential
Camaro, finished 15 after starting 22nd, earning the OPTIMA Batteries Quick
Charger Of the Race Award.
After eight races, Kendall leads the Drivers' Championship point
standings with 270, followed by Schroeder, 185; Gooding, 181; Borkowski,
165; Pickett, 162; Simo, 161; Gentilozzi, 152; Lewis, 132; John Miller IV,
121; and Saunders, 113.
In the Manufacturers' Championship, Ford leads Chevrolet by 43
points, 72 to 29.
