NOTES OF INTEREST: The Cooks Moving Service 100 marks the 15th stop on the
1997 NASCAR Goody's Dash Series schedule, the third nationally televised
event for the Series this year and the 21st visit to the demanding Langley
Raceway in the past 21 years. The practically flat 4/10 mile oval puts a
heavy premium on handling, and the driver who has had the best grip on that
handle is two time champion and four time winner of this race, Larry Caudill.
Caudill won three straight races here from the pole in 1987-1989 and picked
up his fourth Langley trophy, once again, from the pole, during his 1994 trip
here. The 22 year veteran of the Series also holds two track qualifying
records. One, for his six Busch Pole Awards, four more than his nearest
competitor, and the other for speed. In 1989, Caudill posted a 16.889 second
lap, at 84.147 mph., an incredible four miles an hour faster than any Dash
Series driver has been able to turn the Chesapeake Bay area oval since. But,
given this Series' propensity for record breaking performances this year, and
the fact that the Langley Raceway racing surface is brand new for the 1997
season, that record is definitely in jeopardy. Of the 20 NASCAR Goody's Dash
Series races to date at this track, 13 times either the race winner or pole
winner has gone on to become the Series champion in that same year. Dean
Combs, Larry Hoopaugh, Mike Swaim Sr., Hut Stricklin, Larry Caudill, Gary
Wade Finley, Robert Huffman and Mickey York have all posted, at least, one
win or pole here on their way to the Series title. Other notable Dash Series
winners at Langley include Billy Standridge, Rob Moroso, Robert Pressley and
the defending champion of this race, Will Hobgood.
