SCHROEDER FASTEST FOR ROAD AMERICA TRANS-AM
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (August 15) - - Dorsey Schroeder posted his
second "pole" of the 1997 Trans-Am season in qualifying for Saturday's
25-lap, 100.0-mile Road America Trans-Am Classic.
Schroeder, driving the No. 12 Raybestos Ford Mustang Cobra, posted
a time of 2:09.286 (111.38 mph), just edging out Tom Kendall, who has been
the fastest qualifier in eight of 10 Goodyear Fast Five qualifying
sessions.
"When I first went out I just wanted to get a time on the board,"
said Schroeder. "The track was green, though, compared to yesterday's test
day, and my first laps were not good. I slowed down to get some track
position and then started the last lap with Tom (Kendall) right behind me.
I was all over the track, and I even dropped two wheels off in the gravel
at turn 12 -- It was a real banzai run, jumping the curbs. I went into turn
14 (where the timing lights are) intending to go straight off, trying to
get the fastest speed possible. But I decided against trying to go off, as
I thought my lap was shot. It was a real shock to me when my crew told me
that I was fastest. It was not a perfect lap because I went off the track."
Kendall posted a time of 2:09.286 (111.381 mph) to qualify second,
followed by Paul Gentilozzi, Brian Simo and Greg Pickett, who scored his
third Goodyear Fast Five qualifying effort of the season.
"I'm irritated that I qualified second _ we were quickest all
through the session," said Kendall. "At the end I tried to shadow Dorsey
and put in a good lap, but at the timing lights in 14 I went in much deeper
than before and went off. I have nobody to blame except myself. I'm
disappointed to qualify second but with the drawing it really doesn't hurt
-- it really doesn't matter as long as I'm in the top five."
The Goodyear Fast Five random drawing takes place Friday afternoon,
15 minutes after the final practice session.
