18 August 1997
ERIE, CO - M.K. Kanke celebrated his daughter's first birthday by winning the RE/MAX 125 NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour race at Colorado National Speedway. It was Kanke's third victory this season and he won $6,263, the largest purse in his 11-year NFSWT career. "I pretty much had the dominant car tonight," the winner said. As Monica Ann Kanke slept, her father led all 125 laps around the 3/8-mile oval. The elder Kanke beat second-place David Karst by 6.84 seconds. Kanke, Granada Hills, Calif., drove a Pontiac. Karst, who started 13th in his Chevrolet, is from Mills, Wyoming. Denver's John Metcalf was third in a Chevrolet. Doug McCoun, Prunedale, Calif., was fourth in a Pontiac and Busch Pole Award winner Sean Monroe, of Malibu, Calif., was fifth in another Chevrolet. By NASCAR Public Relations
