21 August 1997
HAMPTONVILLE, NC - Travis Carter Racing has extended the contract of current driver Jimmy Spencer for the 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup season. Spencer has driven the #23 Ford Thunderbirds owned by Travis Carter and sponsored by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company since the beginning of the 1995 season. "I'm really excited about coming back to Travis' team," Spencer said. "I can't say enough about this whole operation. (Crew chief) Donnie Wingo and the rest of the guys keep giving me great cars, and I think we can only improve as time goes on. And it's quite an honor to work with the people from R.J. Reynolds. They're the greatest motorsports sponsors in the world." The 40-year old Berwick, PA native is currently 19th in the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup point standings and has recorded one top-five and three top-ten finishes through the first 21 races of the season.
