Mark Martin on Pole for BGN Dura-Lube 200

29 August 1997

DARLINGTON, SC -- Mark Martin will take the field to green in Saturday's Dura-Lube 200.

Martin, who spent the morning worrying about his Winston Cup ride, never turned a lap of practice for his Busch Grand National qualifying effort. The team, dipping into it's book of setups, was able to put a package together for Martin that was good enough for the pole.

Martin knocked out a 30.032 second lap at 163.745 MPH on the first of two laps available to him. After the team told him his time for the lap he brought it back to the garage and parked it.

Sitting next to Martin is Jim Bown. Bown, a part timer to the circuit, came to Darlington earlier in the month for practice and it paid off with a good starting spot.

The drivers that will round out the top-five are Bobby Labonte, Dick Trickle and Glenn Allen.

The Dura-Lube 200 will go green at 1:00 PM.

Mark Martin, if he can take the win, will become the winningest driver in Busch series history.
