Ricky Craven Crashes During Winston Cup Happy Hour

30 August 1997

DARLINGTON, SC - Ricky Craven flattened the right side of his #25 Budweiser Chevrolet a little over halfway through this afternoon's NASCAR Winston Cup Happy Hour practice.

From my vantage point it looked like there may have been some contact with the #6 Valvoline Thunderbird driven by Mark Martin before Craven hit the wall as he exited turn four.

The Hendrick Motorsports team surveyed the damage and quickly started to unload the back up car for tomorrow's Mountain Dew Southern 500. Craven had 31st but will have to move to the back of the 43-car field before taking the green flag.

Jeff Gordon and Ken Schrader also made slight contact with each other but both cars made it through unscathed.

Happy Hour was red-flagged with approximately 10 minutes left in the session due to inclement weather over the race track. NASCAR officials have called it a day.
