Kenny Schrader on Pole for NASCAR Winston Cup CMT 300
14 September 1997LOUDEN, NH - Kenny Schrader will take the field to green in Sunday's CMT 300. Schrader circled the 1.058 mile New Hampshire International Speedway with a 29.484 (129.182 MPH) lap. The time will establish the event record.
Schrader, who won the Busch pole for the July event at New Hampshire, said, "I had a real good seat to sit in. We did have to make some changes. It cooled off a little and Goodyear brought a different tire this time."
How one qualified largely depended on, "the luck of the draw," said Schrader. "The track got a little better and we got some feedback from a few guys. We ended up making an adjustment out on the line."
The track changed drastically as qualifying proceeded and the first twelve drivers that took times were about a half second off their practice times.
The flip side is those that went out after a few of the big guns got smoked managed respectable times. This effect played into the hands of the drivers that round out the top-five - Bobby Hamilton, Brett Bodine, Mike Skinner and John Andretti.
Dave Marcis, who hasn't qualified for six consecutive events managed a time good enough for 26th. The time, though not getting him qualified in round one, should be good enough to make this weeks show.
Second round qualifying is set for tomorrow at 11:00 AM where timed entries 26 to 38 will be determined. The field will raise to 42 with 4 provisional starters.
