SCCA Trans-Am Preview: Children's Hospital Grand Prix of Colorado

THE TRANS-AM HEADS HOME TO HEADLINE THE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL GRAND PRIX OF
COLORADO


       FOUNTAIN, colo._The SCCA Trans-Am Championship returns "home"
to Colorado (location of SCCA Pro Racing) for the Children's Hospital
of Grand Prix, September 26-28, the series' inaugural run at the Pikes
Peak International Raceway.

        The 73-lap, 97.82-mile Trans-Am race, Round 12 of the 13-race
1997 Championship, is slated to begin Saturday, September 27 at 3:00
p.m.  Eastern (1:00 p.m. local time), and will be televised live on
The Nashville Network (TNN). The race will be rebroadcast on The
Speedvision Network, Saturday, October 4 at 2:30 p.m. (ET).

        Also competing during the Children's Hospital Grand Prix of
Colorado weekend are the SCCA World Challenge and the SCCA Spec Racer
Ford Pro Series. Saturday's 45-lap, 60.3-mile combined T1- and
T2-Class World Challenge race will be televised with tape-delayed
coverage on The Speedvision Network, beginning Sunday, October 5 at
3:00 p.m. (ET). The race will be rebroadcast during the Motorsports
Hour Presented by Chevrolet on the Fox Sports Network Wednesday,
October 8-check listing for exact broadcast time.

        Sunday's 36-lap, 48.24-mile Spec Racer Ford Pro Series race
will be televised with tape-delayed coverage on The Speedvision
Network, beginning Sunday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m. (ET). The race will
be rebroadcast on Speedvision Monday, October 13 at 12:00 a.m. (ET).

        With 11-straight wins, Tom Kendall, driver of the No. 11 All
Sport Body Quencher Ford Mustang, continues to make motorsports
history as his victory at Mosport Park (Round 11) set a new mark for
the longest world-wide documentable road-racing-series win streak.

        With the Drivers' and Manufacturers' Championships already
settled, the battle is now for second-place, where six drivers are
vying for the runner-up spot. Kendall, with 371 points, tops the
standings, followed by Dorsey Schroeder, 258; Jon Gooding, 254; Brian
Simo, 236; Paul Gentilozzi, 215; 1997 Rookie Of the Year Mike
Borkowski, 211; Greg Greg Pickett, 203; John Miller IV, 179; Bill
Saunders, 141; and rookie runner-up Michael Lewis, 135 points.

        This weekend's contest will be the 352nd race in the
Trans-Am's 32-year history, and the fifth time the series has raced in
Colorado, dating to 1967. The first two races were conducted at the
former Continental Divide Raceway, just outside of Castle Rock, in
1967 and 1968, with Jerry Titus scoring the win in '67 and Mark
Donohue taking top honors in '68. The Trans-Am didn't return to
Colorado until the 1990-'91 Grand Prix of Denver, when Kendall claimed
the victory in '90 and Irv Hoerr was the '91 winner.
