NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Pre-Race Notebook Hanes 250 Martinsville Speedway September 27, 1997 MARTINSVILLE, VA - ROEHRIG MOTORSPORTS & HANES DONATE FUNDS Roehrig Racing and race sponsor Hanes have joined forces in a unique associate sponsorship agreement for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Hanes 250 at Martinsville Speedway. The associate sponsorship fees will be split between the families of two North Carolina law enforcement officers who were killed last Tuesday on I-95 just outside of Fayetteville, NC. Trooper Lloyd Lowry of the N.C. Highway Patrol and Deputy David Walter Hathcock of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department were shot when Lowry stopped a suspected stolen car and called for back-up. The arrangement is a one-race, two-truck effort featuring Johnny Benson in the #18 Dana/Hanes Dodge and Tony Raines in the #19 Pennzoil/Hanes Dodge. "We are extremely pleased that Hanes Racing not only agreed to be an associate sponsor for our two trucks at the Hanes 250, but were so willing to be a part of our efforts to honor these two fine men who were killed in the line of duty," said Roehrig Motorsports team owner Kurt Roehrig. "We know how important law enforcement officers are to our personal safety and to the safety of the teams and spectators at all of our races. So, we thought it only fitting that we make some effort to help in this tragic situation." TROUBLE IN TURN TWO Two drivers had difficulties during yesterday's final practice. First it was Jamie Skinner, who qualified an impressive 9th for the Hanes 250, who looped his #93 Llumar Window Films Chevrolet in turn two and backed into the outside wall. There was heavy damage to the rear of his truck but Skinner was able to drive away. Jamie is the son of NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie Mike Skinner. A short time later, Philip Morris spun the #81 Spencer & Brown Crane Chevrolet in the same spot on the track and pancaked the driver's side of his truck against the outside wall. Morris was also able to drive away from the scene. The Ruckersville, VA driver earned a 24th-place starting position for the 250-lap event but will start at the rear of the field after missing this morning's mandatory drivers' meeting. ###
