Buckshot Jones Appeal Denied, Penalty Stands

1 October 1997

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - NASCAR announced that a panel of the National Stock Car Racing Commission has denied the appeal and upheld the penalty levied against NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division driver Buckshot Jones on August 26, 1997. The three members who heard the appeal were Bob Smith, John Cooper and Jack Housby.

Jones was fined $5,000 and 50 championship points for intentionally trying to run into the car of fellow competitor Randy LaJoie on the race track during the Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 22. The loss of points dropped the driver of the #00 Aquafresh Pontiac from fifth to sixth in the series point standings. Since that time he has fallen one more position to seventh overall.

The penalty was handed down for violation of Section 12, Rule 4, Article A of the 1997 Busch Series rule book: Actions detrimental to auto racing.
