          JEFF BURTON RACE RECAP: ALL PRO BUMPER TO BUMPER 300
 
 
CONCORD, NC - Jeff Burton drove his Track Gear Ford Thunderbird to a
fourth-place finish in the All Pro Bumper to Bumper 300 Busch Grand
National race at Charlotte Motor Speedway last weekend. A practice
crash sent him to the back of the field for the start of the race on
Saturday, but Burton didn't stay there for long.

The crew brought the same car they had won with at Darlington several
weeks ago to the race at Charlotte. Burton had a good qualifying run
on Thursday that landed him in the fifth starting spot. Friday was
supposed to be an easy day at the track with just several hours of
Busch practice scheduled, but a cut tire on the car of Jim Bown
changed all that. With just minutes left in the final practice of the
day on Thursday, Burton was involved in a wreck when Bown hit the wall
in turn four, came down the track and hit Burton, who was simply in
the wrong place at the wrong time. The crew decided against bringing
out the back up car they had brought with them, and instead went back
to the shop in Mooresville to revamp the car that had brought them a
victory in Bristol. They worked until nearly midnight to prepare the
car for practice on Friday, and were satisfied with the times they
ran.

The green flag flew on Saturday afternoon and Burton began to work his
way through the 43-car field. An early caution flag flew and the call
was made to bring Jeff in for a pit stop for fuel, tires and a track
bar adjustment to correct the loose condition he had been concerned
about. After the stop the team discovered that one of the tires that
had just come off the car had a slow leak. Armed with fresh Goodyears,
Burton once again worked through traffic finally taking the lead on
lap 117, but couldn't hold on to it when the car became too
tight. Burton finished the day in fourth place.  "To start so far back
and come such a long way, it was a great day," Burton said after the
race.
