WoO: Mark Kinser Extends Winning Streak at The PAS

LAKE PERRIS, CA (October 25) - Mark Kinser is still the only driver to
win a Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series feature race at Perris Auto
Speedway.

The defending series champion won his fifth straight feature at Lake
Perris' semi-banked, 1/2-mile oval Saturday, leading all 20 laps from
outside the front row in the Preliminary Feature as the World of
Outlaws opened a $75,000 event.

"We're set up pretty good for this place, and it's one of our favorite
stops on the tour," Kinser said following his seventh Preliminary
Feature victory of the season. "The crew did a real good job,
especially helping me with where they thought I should run on the
track. We don't use a radio, and they did a good job with hand
signals."

Sammy Swindell's magneto problems which caused him to finish 23rd, may
have signaled the end of his battle with Karl Kinser in the car
owners' championship race. Swindell, the leader in the driver
standings, fell 91 points behind with five racing programs remaining
on the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series' 1997 schedule.

Dave Blaney earned his sixth Channellock Fast-Time Award of the year
by pacing the 44-car field with a 122.026-m.p.h. lap. He picked the #6
inversion pill, giving Tyler Walker the pole position in the Vivarin
Dash. The young Californian took full advantage of the break, winning
the five-lap race for the right to start the Preliminary Feature on
the pole.

Kinser started next to Walker on the front row of the evening's main
event. He chased Walker into the first corner, then took the lead by
taking the low line into turn two and winning a back-straightaway drag
race.

Swindell challenged Walker for second place for a lap before executing
an inside move in the fourth corner for the pass. He crossed the
finish line seconds before Lance Blevins took the #21 Citgo J&J for a
spin in turn two. The red flag replaced the yellow when a small engine
fire forced Craig Dollansky to stop the #1W Conn West Freight Systems
Maxim on the back stretch.

Stevie Smith steered his #19 Ingersoll-Rand sprinter around Greg
Hodnett in turn three to take over fourth place as the race resumed.
He continued his charge toward the front the next time around, passing
Walker with a low move in the first corner.

Swindell used a high move in turn one to catch Kinser, then beat him
out of the third corner. The pass was negated, however, when Andy
Hillenburg spun into the turn-two retaining wall. Danny Lasoski
collided with Hillenburg and suffered a broken rear axle.

Sammy challenged Mark for the lead as the green flag replaced the
yellow. Smith caught Swindell the next time around, allowing Kinser to
increase his advantage.

Swindell stopped in turn two early in the fifth lap as the magneto in
his #1 Channellock Gambler failed. He tried to restart the race when
Hillenburg brought out the caution flag late in the seventh lap, but
had to settle for a 23rd-place finish.

Blaney challenged Walker for two laps before steering his #10 Vivarin
J&J into the low line between turns one and two to take over third
place late in the eighth lap.

Steve Kinser, who burst into sixth place from outside the eighth row
during the first half of the race, took over fifth as the leaders
entered lapped traffic during the 13th lap.

Blaney was challenging Smith for the runner-up spot when Mark collided
with Third Heat Race winner Graydon Cross the next time around. Kinser
kept the #5M Wirtgen Maxim running as Cross hit the wall between turns
one and two.

"I was feeling pressure from Stevie and I didn't want to hesitate in
the turn," Kinser said of the incident. "I might have shut the door on
him (Cross) too soon, but it worked out for us."

Walker lost sixth place when he jumped the cushion in the first corner
and flipped with five laps remaining. Hillenburg was unable to avoid
the flipping Walker and stopped in turn two. His crew made quick
repairs on the #2 STP J&J, and Andy restarted the race at the back of
the pack for the third time.

"The King of the Outlaws" challenged Hodnett for fourth place as the
green flag replaced the red, then steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim
deep into turn two for the pass the next time around.

Jac Haudenschild drove the #22 Pennzoil Maxim past seven cars during
the first 17 laps, then passed Randy Tiner for sixth with 2 1/2 laps
remaining.

Kinser was 10 car-lengths ahead of Smith when he took the checkered
flag.

"There for a while, it got a little bit hectic," Mark said of race
which was stopped six times for caution and red periods. "I got a
little pressure from Sammy and I saw Stevie a couple of times, so we
feel fortunate to come away with the win."

Blaney and Steve Kinser claimed the final two automatic starting
positions in Sunday's Vivarin Dash by finishing third and fourth.
Hodnett held off Haudenschild for fifth place. Completing the top 10
in the Preliminary Feature were Tiner, Jeff Shepard, Johnny Herrera
and 18th-starting Brent Kaeding.

For the fourth straight race, one of the Pennzoil World of Outlaws
Series' Rookie of the Year candidates failed to qualify for the
feature. This time, Paul McMahan closed to within 46 points of the
rookie points lead as Donny Schatz had problems in the Third Heat Race
and the "B" Feature.
