Sebring Adopts International Sporting Rules for 12 Hour Race
25 October 1997
Laguna Seca, CA--During the recent SportsCar Championship races a press announcement, concerning the future of the race, was released. Andy Evans, Chairman of International Motor Sports Group (IMSG) has decided to run the 12 Hour race under international technical and sporting regulations. The race will offer a record purse of $500,000 with a reported $100,000 going to the winner. "For many years, the second largest auto race in the world has been a sports car race--the 24 Hours of LeMans," Buoyed by what Evans perceives as a positive response to the recently concluded NAPA AutoParts Octoberfest, he has decided to throw open the race to those teams that could run under FIA as well as ACO (the sanctioning body for the 24 hours of Le Mans) regulations. Evans further commented, "With sports cars representing the second-fastest growing segment of new vehicles in the U.S., we (PSR) believe that the large spectator attendance for the Sebring FIA GT race is evidence that the individuals who buy sports cars also enjoy seeing similar machines in competition. IMSG will work to provide the fans--and the teams, manufacturer's and sponsors who want to reach those fans--with a world-class event in North America." David Treffer -- The Auto Channel
