Lehto To Drive For Hogan Racing In '98
5 December 1997
Carl Hogan, team owner, announced that JJ Lehto will drive for Hogan Racing during the 1998 PPG CART Series. "We are pleased to develop a relationship with a driver of JJ's talent and professionalism. Our agreement with JJ allows Hogan Racing to be competitive for 1998 and beyond," said Hogan. JJ, born in Espoo, Finland, began kart racing at the age of six. JJ's extensive racing career includes five years of Formula One where he was considered a rising star. In 1994, he was selected to join the Benetton team with Michael Schumacher. A pre-season testing accident severely limited that opportunity. Statistics support JJ's Formula One effort. In 1991 he earned his first podium finish (third at San Marino) and from 1992 through 1994, JJ had 19 top ten finishes. The 1991 Spanish Gran Prix, where Mauricio Gugelmin finished seventh, JJ finished eighth, Alex Zanardi finished ninth and Mark Blundell 18th, may provide a preview of 1998 CART competition. Most recently, the 31 year old Lehto drove for BMW in the FIA GT Championship where he finished second in the points standings and was rated the top driver by AUTOSPORT. JJ won four of the eleven races: Hockenheim, Helsinki, Spa-Francorchamps and Mugello. He added four third place finishes for a total of eight podium results. "I am excited to be joining Hogan Racing and the CART Series. Having tested with Hogan Racing, I am impressed with their approach to developing the car and team. I am confident that we can be a successful team," said JJ. JJ and his wife Satu, along with their two daughters, Julia, three and Johanna, nine months, plan to reside in the United States during the season. Hogan Racing will again feature Mercedes engines, Reynard chassis and Firestone tires.
