Sprints: Danny Lasoski Hot at Volusia Speedway

7 February 1998

BARBERVILLE, FL - While the weather was extremely cold for the All Star sprint car season opener Wednesday at Volusia Speedway Park, Danny Lasoski was extremely hot.

Keith Kauffman started from the Butlerbuilt Hot Seat pole position by virtue of fast qualifier Lasoski pulling the invert eight pill before the race. Second starter Lance Dewease immediately pulled out to a nice lead. While he extended his lead, Kauffman was fighting to hold on to second. The battle behind him included Jeff Shepard, Joey Saldana and Dean Jacobs. Saldana spun to a stop in turn two on lap seven, just after taking over second from Kauffman. Billy Pauch clipped the Saldana machine and was done for the evening.

The ensuing restart saw Dewease once again pull out to a commanding lead. The battle raged on behind him as six different drivers were swapping the following positions. Jacobs and Shepard disposed of Kauffman but were gaining no ground on the leader. By lap 15 Lasoski was beginning to make a move using the high side of turns three and four to make up ground. He moved past Jacobs and Shepard and set out for Dewease. With one quick move on the 17th lap he was past the leader and pulling away. He stayed out in front as Dewease held off Shepard for second. Jacobs followed in fourth and Fred Rahmer was fifth.

Lasoski won the United Expressline heat, Kenny Jacobs the Southwest Expressline heat, Pauch the Southwest Glass heat and the United Specialties heat went to Travis Whitney, who flipped after taking the checker. Scott Jones won the United Expressline B Main.
