All Star Sprints Day Two: Lasoski Continues

7 February 1998

BARBERVILLE, FL - The second night of the Al l Star Sprint Florida Speedweeks at Volusia Speedway Park Thursday saw warmer weather and Danny Lasoski get even hotter than the previous night.

The Butler Built Hot Seat pole position was occupied by Fred Rahmer when the green flag waved over the 24 car field. Lasoski was lined up in the sixth position and shot to the high side at the start. He passed four cars through turns one and two and blew by Joey Saldana on the top of turn four and was gone. Saldana kept up the chase in second, while Kenny Jacobs, Rahmer and Frankie Kerr waged war behind him.

Rahmer held third until lap eight when Jacobs got past. The following lap saw Kerr drop Rahmer another spot, and he fell out of the top five on the next circuit when Jeff Shepard cracked into the quintet. Shepard gained fourth the next lap before a yellow waved on lap 11 for Travis Whitney. The top five remained the same until lap 14 when Shepard was able to get past Jacobs and set his sights on Saldana.

Shepard closed on Saldana and tried to find a way past. His last gasp attempt in turn three ended when Saldana slammed the door shut. Lasoski crossed the line a quarter lap ahead of Saldana. Shepard was third with Jacobs and Kerr next.

Explaining his good fortune at Volusia this year, Lasoski said, "Chris Black does a real fine job. This Eagle chassis and Wesmar motor are really working good." The win brought his all time leading Volusia total to seven All Star wins here.

Billy Pauch took the United Expressline heat, Bobby Clark the Southwest Expressline heat, Keith Kauffman the Southwest Glass heat and Todd Shaffer the United Specialties heat. Lance Dewease was the United Expressline B Main winner. 41 cars took time.
