SCCA Announces Eight Race 1998 World Challenge Schedule

10 February 1998

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SCCA WORLD CHALLENGE TO CONTEST EIGHT-RACE 1998 SCHEDULE; ADDITIONAL VENUES
POSSIBLE

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (February 9, 1998)—The SCCA World Challenge, North
America's premier production-based road racing series, will contest an
eight-race championship in 1998, kicking off the season at Heartland Park,
Topeka, Kan., and finishing the year at Pikes Peak International Raceway in
Fountain, Colo.
"Our goal in 1998 was a schedule balancing a mix of street
circuits, arena-viewing road course/oval venues and traditional,
natural-terrain road courses," said Dan Greenwood, SCCA Pro Racing Chief
Administrative Officer. "The World Challenge is the ultimate test for
street-derived race cars—so we wanted our schedule to provide venues that
offer the widest variety of challenges to equalize the different
performance characteristics of the cars competing."
The season opener, May 15-17, will be in conjunction with the
NASCAR Winston West series, and is followed by a Memorial Day weekend road
racing extravaganza at Lime Rock Park, May 22-25, a weekend headlined by
the NTB Trans-Am Series.
Round Three will be at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, June 12-14,
and for Round Four the World Challenge contests its first street race of
the season, competing at the Sprint PCS Grand Prix of Minnesota in
Minneapolis, June 27-28.
From Minneapolis, the World Challenge heads to Grand Rapids, Mich.,
for the inaugural West Michigan Grand Prix, July 24-26, the only new venue
on the 1998 schedule. For Round Six, the series travels north for its only
Canadian race, the Player's Ltee. Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, August 1-2,
in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Can.
The First Union Six Hour of The Glen weekend at Watkins Glen
International, in Watkins Glen, N.Y., August 22-23, will be Round Seven,
and the season will conclude September 25-27, at the Pikes Peak
International Raceway oval/road course.
"We're still in negotiations for additional World Challenge race
dates for 1998, and we'll be expanding our schedule if agreements with
these venues are finalized," added Greenwood.
