NTB Trans-Am Series Announces 11 Races for 1998

10 February 1998

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE NTB TRANS-AM SERIES RELEASES 11-RACE 1998 SCHEDULE; TWO ADDITIONAL
VENUES MAY BE ANNOUNCED

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (February 9, 1998)—The NTB Trans-Am Series, North
America’s longest-running road racing series, has issued its initial
11-race 1998 schedule.
The current 11-race NTB Trans-Am Series schedule includes five
street circuits, four traditional road courses and two road course/oval
arena venues, and kicks off May 15-17 at the Metro-Dade Homestead
Motorsports Complex. The Homestead date is the first of three venues where
the NTB Trans-Am will headline a joint Trans-Am/USRRC Can-Am and GT
weekend.
“It has always been our desire to produce the best schedule
possible, and these first 11 venues achieve an excellent balance of venue
partners and exposure,” said Les Richter, NTB Trans-Am Council Chairman.
The NTB Trans-Am travels to New England for Round Two, competing at
Lime Rock Park during the Memorial Day weekend Dodge Dealers Grand Prix,
May 22-25. After one week off, back-to-back races are slated for Rounds
Three and Four, with the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix (CART FedEx
Championship weekend) up first, June 5-7, followed by a stop at the
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, June 12-14, the second joint NTB Trans-Am
Series/USRRC Can-Am and GT weekend.
The Sprint PCS Grand Prix of Minnesota street race in Minneapolis,
June 27-28, is the fifth contest of the year and the third venue to feature
both the NTB Trans-Am/USRRC Can-Am and GT Championship, and is followed by
the Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland (CART FedEx Championship weekend).
The Cleveland race, July 10-12 at the Burke Lakefront Airport circuit, is
the last “breather” for the NTB Trans-Am competitors before they begin a
tough mid-season stretch that kicks off July 24-26 with the inaugural West
Michigan Grand Prix, the only new venue on the 1998 schedule.
After West Michigan the NTB Trans-Am makes its only 1998 Canadian
stop with the Player’s Ltee. Grand Prix de Trois-Rivieres, August 1-2, in
Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Can. Round Nine brings the NTB Trans-Am back to
Watkins Glen International for the Bud at the Glen weekend, August 6-8
(NASCAR Winston Cup weekend), followed by the Texaco/Havoline 200 weekend
at Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wis., August 14-16 (CART FedEx Championship
weekend).
The NTB Trans-Am’s current finale brings the series back “home” to
Colorado for the Children’s Grand Prix at Pikes Peak International Raceway
in Fountain, Colo., September 25-27.
The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach and the Texaco Houston Grand
Prix may be added to the 1998 schedule following completion of sanction
negotiations.
“With the backing of National Tire and Battery as title sponsor,
the NTB Trans-Am Series has a great future ahead of it,” added Richter.
“The 1998 NTB Trans-Am Series schedule will offer an exciting, varied and
challenging mix of venues that will delight our fans and our competitors.”
