CART: Rahal Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Detroit-- Three-time CART FedEx Championship Series champion Bobby Rahal, who has announced he will end his driving career at the conclusion of the 1998 season, has received the Lifetime Achievement in Auto Racing Award thorugh the National Athletic Awards program.

The annual program honors Americas top athletic achievers for the benefit of the March of Dimes. Joining Rahal among the award recipients were Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson and the National Champion Michigan Wolverine football team, WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes, PGA Tour veteran Tom Kite and the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

"Ive achieved more in my career than I ever thought possible," Rahal said in accepting his award. "Ive been very blessed. To be recognized in the company of these great athletes is high praise."

Rahals exceptional racing career has included sports car and Atlantic series championships, as well as Formula One, Can-Am, Formula Two, Formula Three, NASCAR, IROC and IMSA experience. His 16-year CART career began in 1982 and has included 24 race victories, 18 pole positions and a trio of PPG Cup Championships (1986, 1987 and 1992). The 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner twice has been voted Driver of the Year.

As co-owner of Team Rahal with partner David Letterman, Rahal will field Reynard/Ford-Cosworth Championship Cars on Firestone tires for himself and teammate Bryan Herta in this years 19-race CART campaign. He enters the PPG-Dayton Indy Lights Championship as a team owner for the first time in 1998 and recently launched Gloy-Rahal Racing, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team in which he owns an interest.
