PPIR to Host F2000 Season-Ending Doubleheader

27 February 1998

FAIRFIELD, N.J. The U.S. F2000 National Championship has announced the addition of two races at Pikes Peak International Raceway, September 26-27.

The U.S. F2000 joins the NTB Trans-Am Series, SCCA World Challenge, USAC Sprint Cars, SARA Late Model Stock Cars and the SCCA Spec Racer Ford Pro Series on the Childrens Hospital Grand Prix Weekend, which will mark the conclusion of the 14-race 1998 season. The event will feature twin 39-lap, 49.53-mile contests on the 1.27-mile, 11-turn PPIR stadium-style road course.

After such a fantastic weekend last year with the Indy Racing League, we couldnt wait to return to Colorado, said series co-promoter Mike Foschi. Unfortunately, the IRL swapped its Pikes Peak and New Hampshire dates, and our schedule didnt allow us to follow suit and race in mid-August. Were elated that we can be a part of the Childrens Hospital Weekend, and look forward to closing-out our season in the Rockies.

The addition of the two races, and the reconfiguring of the Atlanta Motor Speedway Weekend to a single race, brings the season total to 14 over 10 weekends the most in series history. The previous high was 12 races in 1996 and 1997.

The best way to become a better race driver is to get out there and race, said Foschi. Having 14 races on 10 weekends keeps the costs down while providing as much racing as possible.

The series kicked-off its 1998 season January 24 at the Walt Disney World Speedway with the Pep Boys IRL, and next travels with the IRL to Phoenix International Raceway, March 20-22. May 15-17 marks the series first road course weekend with a doubleheader at the Metro-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex as part of the NTB Trans-Am/USRRC Weekend. Two weeks later, May 29-30, the U.S. F2000 joins the NASCAR Craftsman Trucks for a double at Watkins Glen International.

In June, the U.S. F2000 joins the NTB Trans-Am/USRRC twice June 12-14 at Mid-Ohio and June 27-28 at the Sprint PCS Grand Prix of Minnesota. July 23-25, its back to the high banks of Charlotte for a doubleheader with the Pep Boys IRL, followed by a return visit to Mid-Ohio with the CART FedEx Championship Series, August 7-9. August 27-29 marks the series first trip to Atlanta Motor Speedway, followed by the finale at PPIR.
