LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - When Shell Oil Products Company made the decision to become the primary sponsor of Joe Gibbs Racing NASCAR Busch Grand National Team and driver Tony Stewart, there was no doubt the team would be able to Count on Shell as the standard by which they could set their goals for the 1998 season.As Stewart and company look to the upcoming Sams Town Las Vegas 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on February 28, their results have shown the standard of excellence Shell has established off the track has carried through to the performance on the track.
Through the first two races at Daytona and Rockingham, Shell has continually demonstrated their belief in our teams ability to succeed, stated Stewart. As a driver, I could not ask for a better sponsor than Shell. They support our team by attending our races and give us the opportunity to meet their local station owners in the markets where we race. This program allows us to introduce our team to new fans in the Shell family and thank them for their support of our program. Although I have not run the Shell Pontiac at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, my previous track experience plus the knowledge Bryant (Frazier-crew chief) and the crew gained at last years race with Bobby (Labonte) should give us a good starting point in getting the car set up for this race, Stewart concluded. We are going to try to get the Shell Pontiac to victory lane. We continue to learn every lap we run and know we are competitive and can run up front. We had a great run in Rockingham. I really wanted to get to victory lane for Shell, Joe Gibbs Racing and Pontiac after our disappointment in Daytona, but it wasnt meant to be. However, we know we are competitive and can run up front all day with some of the greatest drivers.
I wish I had had a pencil and piece of paper to write down all the things I learned following Mark Martin for all those laps. That lesson is invaluable and will help me as a continue to learn about racing these cars.
