USAR Hooters ProCup Series Discount Auto Parts 300: Report and Results

3 March 1998

Lakeland, FL -- "Super" Mario Gosselin led on two separate occasions
for a total of 166 laps enroute to winning the 1998 United Speed Alliance
Racing Hooters ProCup opener at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL.

By winning the Discount Auto Parts 300, the defending series champion
served notice that he will be a strong force to be reckoned with in the
1998 Hooters ProCup Championship battle. The 1998 Championship is worth
$250,000 to the driver fortunate enough to win it.

Gosselin put his Jackaroo Meat Sauces Chevrolet into the lead for good on
lap 204 by passing eventual third place finisher Mike Laughlin. Gosselin
then withstood a race ending challenge by Jay Fogleman to record his sixth
career Hooters ProCup win and collected $11,000 for his effort. By driving
a Chevrolet into Victory Lane at USA International, Gosselin broke a string
of three Ford wins at the high banked 3/4 mile oval.

"I was nearly overcome by exhaust fumes," said a weary Gosselin in Victory
Lane. "My eyes are stinging, but this is a great way to start the defense
of my title."

Fogleman won the Jackaroo Meat Sauces Halfway Leader Challenge Award by
leading lap 150 under caution. The award is worth $1,000. The strategy
nearly backfired when he ran out of gas just moments later.

Bob Schacht set a new qualifying record with a lap of 21.989 seconds for an
average speed of 116.60 mph to take the pole and pick up the $1,000
Gooodyear Pole award in his Miller Lite Ford.

Brad May started in 41st position and finished in 17th to win the $500 Hard
Charger Award in the Naturally Fresh Foods Chevrolet.

The next event for the Hooters ProCup Series will be March 21 at Mobile
(AL) International Speedway.
