Laguna Seca Raceway 1998 Schedule

8 March 1998

MONTEREY, California -- At Laguna Seca Raceway this year, motorsports fans have five opportunities to be up close and personal with the worlds greatest race cars and drivers, racing motorcycles and riders, and historic race cars.

The 1998 schedule of events at the countrys premier road racing track includes rounds of the FedEx Championship Series for CART Champ Cars, leading international sports car championship series and two of the worlds three top motorcycle road racing series. Plus, hundreds of race cars driven into history by legendary drivers will again be on track at speed:

Honda Challenge of Laguna Seca featuring Round 3 of the AMA National Superbike Championship April 17-19

Dunlop United States World Superbike Championship July 10-12

The Chrysler Corporation presents the 25th Annual Monterey Historic Automobile Races Featured Marque - Porsche August 14-16

Honda Grand Prix of Monterey featuring the Texaco/Havoline 300 September 11-13

Visa Sports Car Championships presented by Honda October 23-25

The schedule was announced here today by Laguna Seca Raceway General Manager John Stornetta. "We are very pleased and proud to be able to bring to race fans in Northern California the level of world-class racing we will have at Laguna Seca Raceway in 1998," he said. "No other track in North America has an event line-up like ours. Here, spectators get to be in the middle of all the action in the paddock as well as to watch it on track. Its like going to a 49ers, Raiders, Giants or As game and being able to hang out with the teams before the game starts."

Another difference between Laguna Seca Raceway events and those at other major professional sports venues is even more important. Racing at Laguna Seca Raceway is for people, not for commercial profit.

"Our goal for the 1998 season to be able to distribute more than the $530,000 we distributed last year to the youth and civic groups that help make everything happen at Laguna Seca Raceway," said Bill Reichmuth, President of the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula, which operates the track. "A lot of lives have been made better because, year after year, we have been able to attract top racing series and huge crowds of spectators to the track. The positive impact of our events is what is really important and its why so many people in the community have volunteered their time and talents over 40 years to make events successful."

Laguna Seca Raceway has been operated by the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula since the United States premier road racing track opened in 1957. SCRAMP is a non-profit organization chartered to benefit local charitable and non-profit groups and to promote economic vitality. Because of Laguna Seca Raceway race events, SCRAMP has been able to distribute more than $8 million for Monterey Peninsula and Central California youth programs and community service projects over 40 years and in excess of $1 billion in revenue has been generated for area businesses.
