Pennzoil Cup Returns to Bloomington

11 March 1998

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Pennzoil returns to Bloomington Speedway in 1998 as the title sponsor of the "Pennzoil Cup" sprint car series, and as the official motor oil of Bloomington Speedway. The 1998 Pennzoil Cup presents a unique challenge for sprint car teams because seven of the ten events in the series are competed without wings, and three with wings.

The Pennzoil World of Outlaws will headline the winged races, on June 12. The non-wing events will include the Indiana Sprint Week USAC Stoops Freightliner series on July 24th, and the 10th Annual Sheldon Kinser Memorial on August 28. All events will award the same number of points toward the Pennzoil Cup, however the World of Outlaws and USAC races also award points towards those national series.

As in previous years, the point series will conclude with the Sheldon Kinser Memorial. The Pennzoil Cup and other sprint car division awards will be presented during Racin' Fest '98, on September 18. This is the second year of the Pennzoil Cup, the 1997 winner was Brad Fox, of Avon, Indiana. In winning the Cup, Fox captured three features at Bloomington including the USAC Indiana Sprint Week event.

In other sprint car news from Bloomington, promoter Mike Miles has returned sprint car qualifying to the racing schedule. This change was based in large part on inputs from drivers and fans. The sprint car purse has been increased $1,345 for all non-sanctioned races, which will be seen from third position back.

The point for the fund for Bloomington's three racing divisions will be funded by one dollar from each pit admission. It will be divided equally across the divisions and awarded at the end of the season races, Racin' Fest '98 (sprint cars), and the Third Annual Street Stock & Open Wheel Modified Nationals (street stocks and open wheel modifieds) on September 25th.
