CART: Moreno Returns to Payton-Coyne in 1998

12 March 1998

Project Indy has selected veteran Roberto Moreno to drive its Reynard/Mercedes/Goodyear package at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami Presented by Toyota. Moreno has made 45 career starts in Champ Car competition since 1985, including nine last season while splitting time between Payton Coyne Racing, Newman/Haas Racing and Bettenhausen Motorsports. He made a career-best start at Rio de Janeiro, where he qualified on the outside pole, and added three points-paying finishes, highlighted by a fifth at Detroit.

"We are extremely excited about the opportunity to work with a well-experienced and successful driver such as Roberto," said Project Indy President Andreas Leberle. "It is our goal to continue this relationship with Roberto through Japan and beyond. Although the sponsorship partners are not yet finalized, I remain very optimistic." Moreno said he is pleased to begin his association with the Project Indy team. "I have not had the opportunity to work with Andreas and the team prior to this year, yet feel confident that together we can make very good progress in the series. Project Indy is a dedicated group of people who I am looking forward to working with and I hope, with my knowledge and experience in racing, I can assist in helping them achieve their goals for a successful season."
