PSCR: Tracking the Changes at Sebring

26 March 1998

Sebring, FL, - For 1998, the Exxon Superflo 12 Hours at Sebring was opened up to entries from all sports car series worldwide, and over 50 cars answered the challenge.

"Overall the 1998 12 Hours at Sebring will go down as one of our best events ever," said Tres Stephenson, Executive Raceway Director of Sebring International Raceway. Despite the weather, total attendance exceeded last year with over 100,000 people on site during the five-day event.

Many changes were made to the track, with the emphasis on safety for the drivers. New tire walls were added, barrier walls reconfigured for better line of site and Turn 17 was reconfigured. Paddock improvements included a redesign that ensured ease of access for teams and better spectator interaction. Other improvements to the spectator areas included increased viewing areas and, much to the relief of the fans, two new restrooms.

Race week activities included the annual Rotary Club banquet, and the Sebring Gala, which was well attended, with local dignitaries and race team personnel present.

"We couldn't have done it without the almost 2000 volunteers who worked a combined 5000 hours during race week," Stephenson continued. "They worked around the clock. Anybody can pull off a race in good conditions, but these volunteers worked through conditions that included golf-ball sized hail."

Jim Selwa, Chief Operating Officer of Panoz Motor Sports, the leaseholder of Sebring International Raceway, is excited about the future of Sebring. "This year's race was a great success, and with the additional improvements that we have planned, we will ensure that Sebring retains its legendary status." Plans include continuous improvement to the track, more improvements to the spectator areas, and an 80- to 100-room hotel.
