Texas Businessman T.J. Beverley Buys Darrell Waltrip's Racing Team

27 March 1998

HARRISBURG, N.C. - T.J. Beverley, a 41-year-old businessman from Tyler, Texas, has purchased the NASCAR Winston Cup team founded by three-time series champion Darrell Waltrip.

"Owning a Winston Cup team is a dream come true for me," said Beverley, who also owns and operates Tyler Jet Aircraft, one of the world's largest dealers of corporate jets. "I raced sports cars for 10 years and became enthralled with Winston Cup racing through my business dealings with several people involved in the sport.

"The growth of Winston Cup racing is on an upward spiral and this is a very exciting time to be in this business," Beverley continued. "And, I couldn't think of a better person to be involved with than Darrell Waltrip. He is the greatest spokesman this sport has ever had and he is a lot of fun to be around. I'm looking forward to us having a long-term working relationship."

"Selling the team was a very, very difficult decision for Stevie and I but, quite honestly, I'm relieved," said Waltrip. "We've been through a lot during the last year and it's been an emotional drain on me. Now I can get back to focusing on what I do best-and that's driving a race car."

Beverley will operate the racing operation through TJ MotorSports, Inc., his newly formed organization.
