NHRA: Clemson Students to Work at Fram Nationals

16 April 1998

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Three Clemson University students will be employed as interns at the 18th Fram Nationals, April 16-19 at Atlanta Dragway, as part of the educational partnership formed last year between the South Carolina school and the National Hot Rod Association.

The partnership, the first alliance between a motorsports sanctioning body and a university, was created to provide co-op opportunities for undergraduate students interested in careers in motorsports. Participating students have majors in engineering, marketing, communication and recreation-tourism.

The Students are scheduled to take part in an orientation program Thursday, April 16, where they will take a tour of the facility and get familiar with its surroundings. The students will be assigned duties in ticketing, marketing, hospitality and general event support, Atlanta Dragway general manger Dennis Robarge said.

"This is really a great opportunity for these kids," Robarge said. "It gives them a chance to get experience while working in a unique environment. They'll also have a chance to check out some of the opportunities that are available with the NHRA and in motorsports in general. It's also great for us because we gain some added manpower."

Clemson University officials see the program as an opportunity to increase students' awareness of top jobs that are available in the industry.

"The opportunity it provides our students is immeasurable," said Eddie Smith, Clemson professor of speech and communication. "Our students can discover the world of motorsports through the partnership. With NHRA's credibility in the industry, it's like putting a big stamp on Clemson University students and giving them a letter of recommendation."
