SPRINT: Placerville Speedway in for assault of Civil War Sprints this Saturday

29 April 1998

The sprint cars of the California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series will make their first appearance of the season at Alan Padjen's Placerville Speedway this Saturday night, May 2. This all-sprint car program will be the first of three to take place at the El Dorado County Fairground this season, and will be the third round of competition for the '98 Civil War campaign.

The California Sprint Car Civil War Race Series is dedicated to 360 cubic inch powered sprint cars, the highway bound campaign travels to four different tracks between the months of March and October for a total of 13 events. For each event they participate in, Civil War competitors are awarded cash winnings as well as accumulative points towards the coveted Civil War championship title which, often, is not determined until the final checkered flag waves at the series conclusion in October.

Topping the entry list for Saturday's event will be the driver that is known to his counterparts and fans alike as "the flyin' Hawaiian", Shane Scott. A resident of Chico, California and a seven-time Silver Dollar Speedway champion, Scott recently rose to the top of the Civil War point standings after setting fast time and winning the Civil War feature event last Saturday when the series competed in it's second round of competition at Petaluma Speedway.

After overtaking early race leader Mike Benson, Scott powered his Slim Danielson owned #7d machine into the lead midway through the 30-lap feature event and went undaunted all the way to the checkered flag where he picked up a $1500 victory as well as enough points to advance into the series point lead.

Joining Scott this weekend will be the driver who chased him to the checkered flag last Saturday, young Rio Linda star Roger Crockett. Crockett currently ranks second in the Civil War standings ahead of Jeff Halleib, Mike Wasina Jr., Rick Frock, David Robinson Jr., Ray Rust, Gary Geving, Mark Hall and Mike Benson. All of the top ten point runners are expected this Saturday at Placerville, where a car count of nearly 50 drivers is expected.

Additional drivers that are expected to join the field Saturday will be Placerville's C.J. Humphreys, the only driver to claim a feature victory at Placerville thus far this season and the current point leader of the foothill track. Other locals that should be on hand include Placerville's Dave Angus, the 1997 Rookie of the Year. Shauna Hogg of Fair Oaks, the only female racer to win a Civil War event during its appearance here in 1995 is expected along with Billy Wallace, Andy Forsberg, Randy Mello, Bryan Bullard, Kevin Lovell and many more.

Action is set to begin on Saturday with qualifying at 6:30. The front gates to the speedway will open at 5 p.m. at which time tickets will be available. Adult tickets will be $12, juniors and seniors will be $7, children $3 and those under six will be admitted for free. For any further information on this event contact the track business office at (916) 969-7484 or the speedway at (530) 626-3680.
