WOO: Haudenschild Sweeps Rain-Delayed Knoxville Event

2 May 1998

By Richard Day

KNOXVILLE, IA (May 2) - What a difference 24 hours can make.

Jac Haudenschild was racing for the lead at I-80 Speedway Friday when a crash forced him to watch the final 25 laps from the pits. Crew members Guy Forbrook and Dave Kinnard drove to Knoxville Raceway following the race. After arriving at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, they built a new #22 Pennzoil Maxim for Haudenschild to drive in the rain-delayed feature racing event originally scheduled for April 25th.

Haudenschild made their hard work pay off, winning the caution-free Amoco Night "A" Feature in record time while leading all 30 laps to complete the first double-feature sweep of his World of Outlaws career. Jac completed the race in 7:12, an average speed of 125 miles per hour. That's almost six miles per hour faster than the one-lap record Mark Kinser set last April.

The $10,000 victory, the second of the year for Haudenschild, allowed him to regain the positions he lost in Friday's race and returned him to fourth place in the Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series point standings.

Haudenschild earned the right to start on the pole in the Channellock Dash by winning the April 24th Preliminary Feature. His Channellock Dash victory gave him the pole position in Saturday's "A" Feature.

Jac burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the main event, only to have Fourth Racing Champions Heat Race winner Andy Hillenburg crash into the first corner wall and turn over early in the opening lap. After the red period, the only flag replacing Doug Clark's green flag was the checkered.

Outside polesitter Mark Kinser was unable to keep pace with Haudenschild when the race resumed. Seven-time Knoxville Raceway champion Danny Lasoski drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past Sammy Swindell and Kinser during the first three laps and challenged Jac for the lead early in the fourth lap. "The Dude" almost spun in turn four seconds later, allowing Haudenschild to open a comfortable advantage. He was 15 car-lengths ahead when he entered lapped traffic during the fifth lap.

Kinser regained second place with a diamond move in the third and fourth corners late in lap six. He drove the #5M Wirtgen Maxim high into turn three, turned sharply and took the low line under Lasoski in turn four.

Haudenschild maintained his 15-car-length advantage through lapped traffic until the race's middle stages. Kinser was within four car-lengths by lap 15, but a daring move through a pack of backmarkers enabled Jac to increase his lead to 10 car-lengths two laps later.

Mark narrowed the gap to four car-lengths again by lap 18. He raced wheel-to-wheel with Haudenschild through the fourth corner the next time around, but was unable to surge ahead. They were side-by-side again in turn two early in the 20th lap, but Jac managed to maintain the lead.

A move similar to the one that knocked him out of Friday's race sealed the victory for Haudenschild late in lap 20. Fearlessly threading the #22 between Donny Schatz and Skip Jackson increased his lead to eight car-lengths.

Jac's advantage continued to grow during the final nine laps. He was 15 car-lengths ahead during the 22nd lap and a half- straightaway ahead the next time around. Kinser was racing into the third corner when Haudenschild took the checkered flag for the 23rd victory of his Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series career.

Mark's second-place finish, coupled with Steve Kinser's fourth-place run, left him only one point behind his cousin in their battle for the first place in the World of Outlaws point standings. Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Stevie Smith finished the main event in third place. Johnny Herrera finished fifth, ahead of Lasoski, Third Racing Champions Heat Race winner Dale Blaney, Swindell, Tyler Walker and Jeff Swindell.

Walker, the Amoco Knoxville Nationals' Rookie of the Year in 1996, drove his family's #35 Air Sep Eagle past seven cars to finish in ninth place.
