Indy 500: Drinan's Crash Debris Causes Problems for J.J. Yeley

13 May 1998

INDIANAPOLIS: Toward the end of Tuesday practice, an accident involving Dan Drinan also brought J.J. Yeley off the track. Debris off Drinan's car punctured the undertray of Yeley's car.

"As soon as I came into turn one I saw smoke," said Yeley, driver of the number 44 One Call Communication/Quaker Stat car. "Then I saw him breaking off the wall and spin across the track. I did what I could to dodge his car and all the parts coming off it, but I hit some of the debris which punctured the undertray."

Yeley said the damage was not too serious. "It will be patched this evening, and we'll be back on the track in the morning," said Yeley.

Yeley is attempting to qualify in his first Indianapolis 500. He said one of the main things he has learned over the course of the week is patience. "One thin I've learned is not to get over rambunctious," he said. "I have to remember we still have tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that."
