INDIANAPOLIS: Pep Boys Indy Racing League driver Billy Boat crashed this morning at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway shortly after the track opened for practice.

Boat was in the groove entering turn three. He suddenly went high and into the wall. Boat hit the wall with a glancing blow. He had no steering or brakes after the initial impact. Boat continued through the short chute and hit the wall again in turn four before coming to a rest in the infield grass. Boat exited the car under his own power.

Dr. Henry Bock at the Hannah Medical Center checked Boat for injuries. Boat has been released and is cleared to drive.

Boat drives for A.J. Foyt/Conseco Racing. Billy Boat began driving for Foyt in 1997. He replaced Scott Sharp in the Conseco car. Sharp was injured in two separate accidents at the Speedway last year.
