INDIANAPOLIS: Pep Boys Indy Racing League driver Scott Harrington crashed this afternoon during a qualification attempt for the 1998 Indianapolis 500.

Harrington was heading down the front straightaway when his engine began smoking badly at the start/finish line. Harrington was apparently unaware of the engine problem. Harrington stayed on the gas into turn one. He spun in his own oil in the corner. Harrington did a 180 degree spin and hit the turn one wall hard. He continued to slide across the track and came to a rest in the infield grass at the entrace of turn two. Safety crews responded immediately. Harrington exited the car under his own power. He showed his disgust by throwing the steering wheel from the car. He was transported to the infield Clarian Emergency Medical Center. Harrington was uninjured and has been cleared to drive. His car will not be able to be repaired in time for qualifying.

Qualifications for the 1998 Indy 500 began promptly at 12:00 today. Twenty-six of the available thirty-three positions were filled yesterday. Today is the final day of qualifications for the Indy 500. Qualifying ends at 6:00 p.m. CST.
